Luminant’s Gift to Sulphur Springs

Luminant is giving its 4,900-acre Monticello Thermo mine site to the city of Sulphur Springs while it continues reclamation work. The city plans to transform the land into a recreational hub. But state regulators have taken issue with Luminant’s restoration strategy, in part because it calls for leaving intact an acidic pit and large mound of excavated dirt that contains toxic heavy metals.
