There are 29 permitted lignite strip mines in Texas (lignite is a low-grade form of coal). Companies have ceased operations at some of the mines, but are continuing to restore the land as required by law. San Miguel Electric Cooperative has mined thousands of acres owned by the Peeler family in South Texas to feed the company’s 400-megawatt power plant.
