A repeat drought as severe as one that took place in the 1950s would cause the state’s municipal water demands to exceed existing water supplies, according to calculations from the Texas Water Development Board. If lawmakers do not take action and use the strategies recommended by the board, the gap between water demand and supply during a severe drought will get worse.
